Meet our Panelists - Maria G. Sharp, Founder & Director of The Scandinavian School of Jersey City
We are so excited that Maria G. Sharp will be joining our panel of Mojo Mamas! Maria is a mother of two and a true powerhouse! In 2010 she founded The Scandinavian School of Jersey City, a one of a kind, bi-lingual, progressive preschool based on the Reggio-Emilia educational philosophy and Scandinavian culture. Today Scandi School is one of the most sought after preschools in the area with a long wait list to get in.
Maria came to New York from Sweden to work as an Au Pair when she was 18 years old. She quickly met her husband, then a famous DJ, and decided her future was in America. Maria went on to study at Hunter College where she earned a Masters of Education. When she had her first child, a daughter, she wasn’t happy with the daycare/preschool options available to her family. With a passion for education and a wish that her daughter would have a similar upbringing to the one Maria had had in Sweden, she set out to create a school of her own. Starting with one class of just a handful of toddlers, her daughter included, the little school has now grown to over 100 children, and in 2017 she launched the first ever out-door/forest kindergarten in Hudson County.
Finding time for herself while juggling a school in expansion and two young children, is not easy but Maria tries to squeeze in some Pilates and weekly Yoga with her daughter. She also loves to spend time in nature, biking and cooking. To recharge her batteries, Maria enjoys to go on short weekend get-ways but most of all travel to Sweden to spend time with family and friends.
Maria will bring a Scandinavian perspective to the discussion about motherhood. Coming from a region with paid parental leave, free child care and education, and greater gender equality than anywhere else in the world has certainly influenced her both as a mother and as a Mamapreneur.
